Why South Australia?

South Australia is the complete package! We have the lifestyle you dream of; world-class schools, universities and training; an environment that’s ripe for business and increasing opportunities to drive your career to new heights.

But don’t take our word for it! Adelaide, South Australia’s capital city, has been named Australia’s most liveable city, and the third most liveable city in the world, by the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Index 2021.

What you'll love about living here

Forget about planning your life around traffic… Our capital city, Adelaide, is only 20 minutes from the beach and even less from the picturesque Adelaide Hills and Adelaide International Airport.

We enjoy a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild wet winters. An average summer’s day is around 29°C, and a winter’s day around 15-16°C.

Your housing options are many and varied – from stylish apartment living to semi-attached residential housing or single-residence homes on blocks from 300 square metres 1000 square metres or more. So, whether it’s city, suburban or country life you’re after, South Australia has something for everyone at a far more affordable price than Sydney and Melbourne.

When things are not going smoothly, Adelaide and regional South Australia are well-supported with modern facilities for emergency and general health care, as well as access to specialist health services.

Things to do in South Australia

No plans for the weekend? No problem! Check out one of globally-renowned festivals or events – like Adelaide Fringe Festival, Adelaide Festival or WOMADelaide.

If it’s sport you’re into, go to the footy or cricket at Adelaide Oval – one of the nation’s finest sporting venues or join a local sporting club, a passion and way of life for many South Aussies!

Enjoy our restaurant and café culture, buoyed by world-famous chefs, winemakers and producers or visit one of 200 cellar doors across our 18 globally-renowned wine regions, producing more than half of Australia’s wine.

If you feel the urge to burn that off, there’s hiking and walking trails with breath-taking views of waterfalls, the coastline (and whales if you’re lucky), the outback, indigenous heritage, botanical gardens, you name it – we’ve got it!

Getaway for a road trip to stunning regional areas on the River Murray or coastline, where you can get into water sports, explore the outback or get to know our wildlife.

We have a world-class education system supporting excellent schools (government, denominational and independent), three major teaching universities and a network of training organisations providing nationally – and internationally recognised – qualifications.

Adelaide's universities are consistently ranked among Australia's best for research, driving opportunities for involvement in projects of national and international importance.

Work here

It’s a place where brilliant minds develop business ideas, test them and sell them to the world.

South Australia embraces collaboration and partnerships across industries, bringing together business and research to inspire and develop commercial outcomes.

That’s why you’ll find leading-edge innovation precincts in South Australia. Tonsley, Lot Fourteen, Adelaide BioMed City and three world-class defence industry precincts, are pushing the boundaries of possibility to create a better future.

Our government is committed to seeing these precincts flourish and works side-by-side with global entities and grassroots enterprises, helping to attract investment and provide a seamless experience, aligning policy and ambition to make great things happen.

DIS City

Do business here

Doing business is more affordable in South Australia with premium city office accommodation significantly cheaper than that in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

You’ll also find South Australia has competitive labour costs, with no payroll tax for wages under $1.5 million, average workers’ compensation premiums lower than those in Victoria and New South Wales, as well as wages below the national average.

South Australia already has a strong skilled workforce and the pandemic has seen many professionals return (and stay) in our State, recognising the value of our lifestyle and opportunities.

But beyond that, the government is committed to building on the skills of people who live here, providing increased incentives and access to education and training that aligns to future industries and areas where there will be strong demand in the years ahead.
